Obituary of Ammini Abraham

Please share a memory of Ammini to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Chapel Hill - Ammini Abraham, age 89, passed away on Wednesday, March 27, 2019.  Her death came six weeks after her husband of almost 62 years, Kuruvilla Abraham, passed away.  She was a warm, loving, and steadfast wife, mother and grandmother, and she will be greatly missed.

Ammini was born on November 1, 1929 in Pandalam, Kerala and was the sixth of ten children, two of whom died at a very young age.  Throughout her children’s lives, she would tell the three of them many stories about growing up in Pandalam, the long walks to school with her brother, the tapioca and fresh vegetables her mother would pick from the garden for dinner, and her great joy as a child at seeing her father return from work.  As she grew, Ammini’s family was central to her life, and her warm tone and ready smiles when she  talked about her parents and siblings made it clear how important they were to her.   At age 17, Ammini went to Vellore for her nursing education and after graduation, began working as a registered nurse.  She married her husband in 1957 and lived and worked as a nurse in Calcutta, India until 1971, when she and her family emigrated to Ann Arbor, Michigan.   In Ann Arbor, and later in Flint, Michigan, Ammini raised her three children and worked as a nurse until she retired in 1994.

Ammini had a deep faith in God and regularly imparted the words and lessons of the Bible to her three children.  Reading the Bible with the family, signing songs, and praying to God, was part of her daily life until she died.  She had many interests, including cooking, sewing and knitting, and had a deep love for books and reading, but her main focus was on her children and husband.   She always had a sweet, loving disposition and was a steady source of support and joy for her children, and later, her seven grandchildren.  She especially loved taking special homemade snacks to all of them when she visited.  She lived a blessed and happy life for 89 years.  Her smile, support and constant love had a calming and welcoming effect on all of us.  She will live in our hearts forever.

A funeral service was held on Saturday, April 6, 2019 in the Chapel of Walker's Funeral Home.  Burial followed in Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery.
