Obituary of Hannah Green Sutton

Hannah Green Sutton, nee Oppenheimer, died on October 22, 2018 at the age of 83, after a battle with cancer.
Hannah was born in Dusseldorf, Germany on October 14, 1935. Following Kristallnacht in 1938, she and her parents fled to Holland, England, Wales, and finally the United States. She spent her childhood in Chicago and Pittsburgh, where she attended Carnegie-Mellon University.
She earned a PhD in biochemistry from Cornell University in 1964 and worked as a researcher at the University of Hawaii and at Duke University. She later used her background in biochemistry as a research librarian and patent agent for Burroughs-Welcome, before retiring and moving to Hendersonville, NC in 2003.
Hannah regained German citizenship in 2014 and was pleased to be able to return to Dusseldorf in April 2016 and again in November 2017, where she was honored in Kristallnacht commemoration events.
She is survived by her husband, Gerry Sutton, two daughters, Catherine Green Anthony and Linda Green, stepdaughter Charlotte Sutton, stepson Rich Sutton, and three grandchildren.
A graveside memorial service was held on Sunday, October 28th at Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery.
The Sutton family is under the care of Walker's Funeral Home of Chapel Hill.
