Started my academic career same time as Bill when we both arrived at U.K., Lexington. I spent much time with Bill as I always looked up to him and often received sound and profound advice and encouragement. So wonderful a friend you were, brother, thru my entire career. I'll miss you. Dr. Profitt was the first Chair of our graduate program at the University of Kentucky. Whenever he and Sara would come to Lexington to visit his daughter Lola, he would make it a point to drop by the Program and meet with our residents for an hour or so. Sometimes it was via a PP Presentation, other times just a 'fireside chat' of sorts, but always sharing new and relevant information. I will always be grateful for the generosity with which he shared his time with us at UK. And most of all I will forever cherish his friendship.

I will always treasure the week spent with Dr. Proffit, Dr. Hershey, and Dr. Bean in the UNC mini residency in 2003, and an evening with Dr. and Mrs. Proffit in the Proffit's home when they hosted the five of us. This week helped 'jump start' my return to academics after a 24 hiatus from teaching. I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to come to UNC and the wisdom that he and his department imparted. The 'Proffit' textbook(s) was 'my bible.' Thank you.

I remember fondly all the father-son doubles battles over the years and the great pleasure he took in seeing who could hit the biggest forehand, often followed by sharing the latest in large-scale model trains. I am so sorry to hear of the loss of my "favorite Chapel Hill boy," Bill Proffit. He was a great dentist, but an even better man. Over the years I worked with him at UNC School of Dentistry, he always treated me with kindness and respect, although we did not always agree. Inevitably, when we were headed into a difficult discussion, he would say, "When this is over, we are still going to be friends." It always eased my anxiety because losing the battle was far less important than losing my friend. You will be missed, Dr. P. I hope this last train ride is your favorite one yet!

It is with great sadness I heard of Dr. Proffit's passing. He has always been a mentor, someone to challenge me, and I was proud to call him my friend. I will miss his sage advice as I continue my career. I hate it that I will be unable to make the service on Saturday, but will do my best to send a donation for the Chair in his memory. My deepest sympathy to Sarah and all the family. He was a wonderful and unique man who will be truly missed by all who knew him.
