Obituary of Frank Douglas Penland

Mr. Frank Douglas Penland, 70, of Cedar Grove, NC, passed on to his heavenly home on Monday, March 5, 2018.
Doug was born July 28, 1947, the son of the late Grover and Hazel Cooper Penland of Hurdle Mills, NC. He proudly served his country in Vietnam in field artillery and received a Purple Heart for the sacrifices he gave to his country.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sandra Sumner Penland of the home; his son, Tony Penland, and wife Traci, of Roan Mountain, TN; daughters, Holli Klooz, and husband Michael, of the home, and Stacey Glenn, and husband Scott, of Hurdle Mills, NC. In addition to his wife and children, Doug proudly answered to the title of Pa to his four grandchildren; Haley and Kara Penland and Austin and Cailin Glenn. He is also survived by his brothers Glenn Penland of Hillsborough, NC, Wayne Penland and Bobby Penland, both of Graham, NC; Billy Penland of Hillsborough, NC; and a sister, Pam Reyes of Graham, NC.
In addition to his parents, Doug was preceded in death by his brothers, Carl Cooper and Donald Penland, both of Roxboro, NC, and Danny Penland of Hillsborough, NC; and two sisters, Patricia Penland of Hurdle Mills, NC, and Helen Penland of Hillsborough, NC.
Doug cherished his family and loved to cook for everyone. He enjoyed music and loved listening to bluegrass gospel on Sunday mornings. He always looked forward to his daily trip to the Hurdle Mills Country Store to have coffee and fellowship with his friends, all of whom he cherished and respected.
The family received family and friends at Walker’s Funeral Home in Hillsborough, NC on Thursday, March 8th from 6:30pm until 8:30pm and at the home in Cedar Grove before and after this time.
Pallbearers will be Mickey Penland, Michael Penland, Kenneth Smith, Jonathan Penland, Jarrod Penland, and Kevin Summey. Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Mayton, James Shankle, Wally Howard and Keith Sheppard.
A funeral service was conducted by Pastor Douglas Brown on Friday, March 9th at 2pm at Walker’s Funeral Home, 204 N. Churton Street, Hillsborough followed by a graveside service at Walnut Grove Methodist Church in Hurdle Mills, NC.
