John/Max was what a Boston College student-athlete should be-a fierce competitor on the Gridiron and a gentleman off the field.Max was very well respected by his peers.
As a young coach on the staff and a BC alumnus I was very proud to work with Max and his teammates on a daily basis.Max was very loyal to his Alma mater.
We will all miss Max very much.I send the thoughts and prayers from the Boston College Community to Max and his family.

John was a conscientious, tuff, and lovable player to coach. He wanted to know every detail on how to be the best he could be. He was tenacious on the field but a TEDDY BEAR off. As a coach he was the kind of guy you never forgot as he gave his heart and sole for his team but most of all for his teammates. He was so caring for others and what else can you say than— “JOHN WAS THE GREATEST”- Coach McNally

My condolences. "Big Max" was just that, a huge football player and a great guy. Always had a smile on his face even as he was crushing some of us in the "Oklahoma" drills. I still have nightmares! God speed Max and God Bless to your entire family.

Betts, I am rarely at a loss for words but having just learned of John's passing, I am really struggling. I am so sorry for your loss and I hope that you will find comfort in all the laughs and great memories you had together, that we all had together, and in knowing that Max was truly loved by so many of us.
I will miss you Big Max and you will be in my heart and memories for the rest of my own life. I am glad we reconnected a few years ago when you shared your warrior like plan with me to fend off the Big C at least until you walked your beautiful daughter Lauren down the aisle. Mission Accomplished! And then you added enough time to hold your grandson in your arms....life was good. But yours was way too short my friend, so I can only wish you eternal peace. I hope our paths cross again someday, who knows what the future holds for any of us!
Love and big hugs, Bake
