Obituary of Leonard Hampton

Mr. Leonard Hampton died on Sunday, December 17, 2017 at his home in Twin Lakes Community in Elon, North Carolina. He was born on April 9, 1921 in Porterdale, Georgia, the son of the late James Riley Hampton and Minnie Leona Anderson of Kannapolis, North Carolina. He was married to Sarah Howell Ross of New London, North Carolina, who preceded him in death. They were married on May 29, 1942 in New London.

He is survived by, his son Michael Leonard Hampton, his wife Melanie Jean Hampton, and their children Heather Nicole Martin and Rachel Leann Richie; his daughter Sarah Elizabeth Hampton Parham, her husband Benjamin Clayton Parham, and their children Julianna Elizabeth Parham and Ross Clayton Parham; his brother Everett 'Bud' Hampton.

Leonard served in the United States Army and the Army Air Corps during WWII, and was honorably discharged in 1945. Afterward, he attended the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, graduating with a bachelors in business administration in 1949. Upon graduation he was employed by Hospital Saving Association in Chapel Hill, which later became Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. He worked there until his retirement in 1986.

Leonard and Sarah lived in Chapel Hill until 2004, when they moved into the Twin Lakes Community of Elon, North Carolina. Leonard was a kind and gentle man that will be remembered as a wonderful father, a caring grandfather, and a devoted fan of the UNC Tarheels.

A Graveside Service was held on Thursday December 21, 2017 at Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. A Memorial Service will be held at Twin Lakes Community in Elon, North Carolina at 2PM on Saturday January 6, 2018.
