Frances Cherry Cartwright Parker
CHAPEL HILL - Frances Cherry Cartwright Parker was born in Elkton, Ky. Cherry had a rewarding and distinguished career in nursing. She received her RN at St. Thomas School of Nursing in Nashville, Tenn., and a B.S. in Public Health at UNC-Chapel Hill. She taught in the UNC-CH School of Nursing for eight years in pediatric and community health nursing. Cherry also worked as Medical Nursing Supervisor for UNC Hospitals.
Cherry's other love was writing. For several years she served as editor of the N.C. League for Nursing News. As a freelance writer she co-authored with her mother The Hand-Me-Down Cookbook, and a number of her short stories were published in The Carolina Quarterly, Pembroke Magazine, The State, Tar Heel Magazine, and Living with Children, to name a few. In the 1980s she wrote a weekly column, "With Cherry," that appeared in three local newspapers.
In 1943 Cherry married the late Fred Parker. They were together nearly fifty years. She is survived by her two children, son David Parker (Susan) of Cary, N.C., and daughter Pam Carroll (James) of Wilmington, N.C.; three grandaughters, Kimbery Carroll Ward (Jay) of Winston-Salem, N.C., Laura Parker Bass (Jason) of Raleigh, N.C., and Sarah Parker of Cary, N.C.; and 3 great-grandchildren, Grace Ward, Jack Ward, and Grady Bass.

A memorial service will be held at Carol Woods Assembly Hall on Saturday, December 14, 2013, at 11:30 a.m. A private burial will be held at 10 a.m. at Westwood Cemetery.
