Obituary for Margaret W. Phelps Margaret Walker Phelps, 99, of Hillsborough, died Saturday April 12, 2014. Mrs. Phelps was at home with her family at the time of her passing. Margaret was born in Orange County on April 3, 1915 to J. Edward and Sudie Dameron Walker. Margaret was the surviving sibling, being predeceased by two siblings, Harold Walker (Vera) and Sybil Rosemond. A graduate of Hillsboro High School and East Carolina University (ECTC), she majored in education. Beginning her career in Eastern North Carolina, Margaret was a classroom teacher for over thirty-years, before retiring in the Orange County School system in 1977. She was a founding member of the Schley Grange, a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church, the Orange County Retired Teachers Association, and a former member of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority. She was a 4-H leader, served on various church committees and was a member of the choir. Margaret enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking, reading, and the life of a farmer's wife. She married Marvin Phelps on May 3, 1941, who passed in 2000. They had three children, Elaine (Robert) Marinucci of Grand Island, New York, Rachel Phelps-Hawkins of Hillsborough, and a son, Joe Phelps of Hillsborough. She is survived by her children, and their grandchildren; Jason Hawkins, Jonathan (Ashley) Hawkins, Mark (Rachel) Marinucci, of Grand Island, New York, and a granddaughter of Wilmington, Michelle Stough. In addition, Margaret is survived by seven great-grandchildren; Jacob Stough, Dakota Hawkins, Chase & Ayden Hawkins, Tyler Mangum, Adrianna, Luca and Marco Marinucci. Her very special sister-in-law, Vera Collins Walker of Cedar Grove and a brother in-law, Claude Phelps, of Raleigh, also survive Margaret. She is survived by a nephew, Everett Rosemond, two-nieces, Joyce Young & Virginia Baldwin, in addition to many great nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and extended family-friends. A visitation will be held at Mars Hill Church on highway 57 at 4Pm on Wednesday, April 16, with funeral and burial to begin at 6:15Pm. The family is receiving at the home of Jason Hawkins and arrangements are through Walker's Funeral Home of Hillsborough (919-732-2121). A special thank you to members of Mars Hill Church, the Schley community, friends, and neighbors, for visits, food, and company in recent months. Flowers are acceptable.
