HAW RIVER, NORTH CAROLINA - Mrs. Shirley Dawn Jarvis 79, of 909 Pine St. passed to the Lord Saturday May 17, 2014 at her residence. She was the wife of the late John W. Duke Jr. and Harold R. Jarvis Jr. and daughter of the late Mr. Joseph J. Desrochers and Beatrice M. Bennett of Dalton, New Hampshire. She was a member of the Peacemakers Quilt Guild and Slap Happy Quilters of Alamance County where she fabricated with love many quilts for the cancer patients at Alamance Regional Hospital. She loved to knit and sew, and knitted infant hats for new born baby's of the Lambs Chapel in Haw River where she was also a member. She was also a member of the Mebane Public Library Knitting Club, Haw River Senior Citizens Club, Haw River Historical Club, First Baptist Church Bible Study, and prayer shawl ministry of Mebane Presbyterian Church. You could always count on her love and smile that just seemed to bring joy to all people she touched. In the past she was a den master and treasurer with the Cub Scouts of America for her sons, and helped out with the Girl Scouts of America for her daughter. She also served at a Past Worthy Matron of her chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in Lancaster, New Hampshire. For years she was head of medical records at Weeks Memorial Hospital. In the beautiful White Mountains of New Hampshire, she was always volunteering on various committees. As a volunteer with Hospice in Lake County, Florida, and Virginia Beach, Virginia she touched many lives and helped many families get through the process of passing to heaven. She also volunteered with the Loaves and Fishes to make sure the hungry were fed. She loved her four children, eight grandchildren, and one great grandchild most of all and did all she could to make sure they all were provided for and lived wonderful spiritual life's. Children include Roger D. Duke of San Diego, California, Richard W. Duke of Mebane, John E. Duke of Haw River, and Maureen D Brines of Lusby, Maryland. She has a surviving brother Dean Desrochers who currently lives with his wife Jean in Frankfort, NY. She was preceded in death by her brother Keith, Kyle, and Dale Desrochers. She also loved to garden, cook, and water aerobics at Millennium Fitness where her smile could be seen a few times a week. Most of all she loved to do and provide for others less fortunate than her. There will be a memorial service for her at 10am, Wednesday May 21, at the Lambs Chapel, 415 Roxboro Rd., Haw River NC. The family will be available to meet guests at 9 am. Flowers have already been donated for the service. In Liu of floral arrangements, the family asks that donations in her name be made to Lambs Chapel or Hospice & Palliative Care Center of Alamance - Caswell.
