I had lost touch with John since I retired from the City of Durham except for occasionally seeing him at the NCAwwa/WEA annual conference. I was shocked to see notice of his passing in the Spring issue of NC Currents that I received today. I am so sorry for your loss. John was a great guy and we will miss him. My deepest condolences to the family.

When ever I hear the saying Lead by Example , I think of my Father-in-law John Greene . I swear I think that that saying was written about him . Not a kinder soul have I met on this earth than him . He ruled his house , not with an iron fist , but with love and compassion . You couldn't out work the man he was always busy with projects , always with something that needed taken care of or just upgrading . I know he loved me and he never had to say it , I knew he was proud of me and and he only had to show it with a smile . Me and John had a bond of our own talking about finding the next deal at a yard sale or at the dump , how we could take ones mans trash , and shine it up and make it worth something again . His grandchildren adore him , as much I as do . I have learnt so much from this man . He will be greatly missed but never forgotten ! He said at his own fathers funeral that there was the right way the wrong way and his fathers way , but being around his family and his children my wife one of them . I think the saying should have been there is the right way the wrong way and then there is the Greene way !!!

Having an office right next to John's was like sitting next to the coolest kid in high school. He had a quick wit, mischievous sideways glance, and a heart of gold. I remember him being the last one in the office one Friday afternoon, and I said, "I'm heading out, so if you need anything....too bad." He roared with laughter. We took pride in outwitting or out-pranking one another. I bought him pink sticky notes on purpose because he hated them. He told me he was retiring because of me.
John was one of those people you could know for 5 minutes and feel like you had known him forever. He was the type of person who always had time for you and always made you feel important and valued. I was blessed to help assemble a scrapbook, "The Adventures of John Greene," as a retirement gift, and we collected sentiments from friends, family and colleagues. They poured in. Everyone who knew John loved him and loved him deeply. He will be greatly missed. My deepest condolences to Katherine and the family.

A NOTE TO JOHN'S FAMILY AND FRIENDS,
When Sharon and I learned about the sudden death of John, we were shocked and saddened---and thankful. Yes thankful that our Heavenly Father allowed me to work at OWASA during the first half of John's tenure there. Philippians 1:3 states:"I thank my God upon every remembrance of you." I will always cherish - and be thankful for - the experiences that John and I shared while working together at OWASA. He had a very special ability to provide leadership for all those who worked with him.
We pray that our loving God will provide for all of you the comfort and peace that will be needed as we adjust our life here on earth because our good friend has been called to his eternal home in heaven.

NEWS RELEASE January 6, 2015
OWASA mourns the passing of John W. Greene Jr., the utility's former General Manager of Operations
On Sunday, January 4, 2015 John W. Greene Jr. passed away in his sleep.
Mr. Greene retired in October 2013 after a very distinguished 32-year career at OWASA in various capacities including 15 years as General Manager of Operations.
"John Greene was a dedicated and hard-working public servant who was admired, loved and respected by all," said Ed Kerwin, OWASA's Executive Director.
"He made many important and long-lasting contributions to OWASA, to the Carrboro-Chapel Hill community, and to numerous water and wastewater utility professionals throughout North Carolina. John was simply a wonderful person who we will miss dearly. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family."
Bob Epting, OWASA's General Counsel, said "John Greene's example of selfless leadership, devotion to service, and kindness to everyone he met, will be missed greatly. No one's work has been more vital to our community than that to which John devoted substantially all of his professional career over the last thirty years, to provide the clean water vital to sustain our community, and to be sure that after its use, that water was cleaned and returned fit to sustain creatures and communities downstream. We will miss him, but his example will continue to strengthen those who knew him, and to serve us all."
John, a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother, is survived by wife Katherine Dillon Greene, of Pittsboro, NC; children Michael Greene, of Raleigh and Katie Rich (husband Mike) of Snow Camp, NC; grandchildren Austin, Jace, and Grace Rich of Snow Camp, NC; sisters, Karen Houghton (husband Jerry) and Brenda Harris (husband Mark) both of Roanoke, VA; and brother Richard Greene (wife Cindy) of Raleigh, NC.
At OWASA, Mr. Greene's responsibilities included oversight of OWASA's lakes, water and wastewater treatment plants, water distribution and wastewater collection systems, pump facilities, laboratories and maintenance. He managed the majority of OWASA's operating and maintenance budget and the majority of OWASA's employees.
Mr. Greene was the Director of Engineering and Planning from 1991 to 1998 after serving as the Assistant Chief Engineer and Field Engineer.
John contributed greatly to professional development in the water resources field through his work and leadership with the North Carolina American Water Works Association-Water Environment Association (NCAWWA-WEA), the NC Collection and Distribution School, and the NC Wastewater Operators' School. He served on the Board of Trustees for the NCAWWA-WEA and the Board of Directors for the Upper Cape Fear River Basin Association.
Mr. Greene was highly regarded in the water resources field in North Carolina. In 2008, he received the NCAWWA-WEA's Raymond E. "Red" Ebert Award for excellence in water and wastewater engineering and management.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 PM on Thursday, January 8, 2015 at Walker's Funeral Home in Chapel Hill. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM on Friday, January 9, 2015 at the Chapel of the Cross.

John was one of my favorite people to work with. He was extremely helpful and a joy to be around. He and I worked together on a water piping issue in 2013 (as well as other times over the last 15 years), and I could not have had a more pleasant experience in sorting through the technical details of the situation with him. He ensured that a resolution was accomplished prior to his retirement, so that the work would not fall on someone else. I was lucky enough to run into him last November to thank him again for his efforts. He was a great man, and will always be fondly remembered.
