I am Milton's youngest son and I have some great memories of my father through the years. Sunday supper at Grandma Phelps' surely included fried chicken, going to Tom's store on Corbett Ridge Rd (original building) and pulling pickles out of the barrel while all the farmers talked about crops and critters while smoking their pipes around the pot bellied stove. I remember Dad taking me to Talley's and setting me up on the ice box, handing me a coke and a bag of peanuts. Going to Duke Blue Devil Football games and riding in the back of Dad's old Ford truck. Then there was our cross country road trip (California to Carolina) where I learned more about my Dad than I ever had before. Then there is Dad dancing with my new bride at my wedding, following me around to steal my cocktails because Mom was dumping his out. My proudest memory of Dad is when by coincidence he was visiting me in California and I was advanced to Senior Chief Petty Officer. He was there to pin on my new anchors. I love my parents dearly and I have had the disadvantage of distance for the last 30 years that has robbed me of some precious times, but I will cherish the memories I have forever.
