Burlington NC Virginia Katherine Grotgen Tilden died on February 8, 2015 at the age of 95 at Twin Lakes Retirement Community in Burlington, NC. She is pre-deceased by her husband of 62 years, Robert Bryan Tilden Sr., her parents, George Thaddeus Grotgen and Carrie Virginia Meier, also her brother George Thaddeus Grotgen Jr. and sister Caroline Ann Grotgen Lester. She is survived by her son R. Bryan Tilden and wife Sandra; her granddaughters Hilary Katherine Tilden Cook and husband Joseph, Leah Margaret Tilden and husband Jonathan Long; great grandsons Connor Matthew Long and Jason Matthew Long; niece Carol Ann Grotgen Wood, grandnephew Joseph Edward Wood Jr. and wife Arwin, and great-grandnieces Kathryn and Lauren Wood. Virginia was born June 29, 1919 in Wilmington North Carolina, graduated from New Hanover High School and Motts Business College. She was a Girl Scout Leader in Wilmington and served on the Cape Fear Council of Girl Scouts. An avid amateur genealogist, she was a member of the Order of the First Families of North Carolina; Colonial Dames of the 17th Century, Sir Humphrey Gilbert Chapter; Daughters of American Revolution, Davie Poplar Chapter; Nansemond Indian Tribe; and Armstrong Clan Society. She retired after 20 years of service as Business Manager for the UNC Chapel Hill Math Department. She was a life-long communicant of the Lutheran Church, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Wilmington and then Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Chapel Hill where she worked tirelessly with the quilters' ministry for many years. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 12 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 300 East Rosemary Street in Chapel Hill. Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. in the Narthex, followed by 11:00 a.m. service, then interment at Chapel Hill Cemetery.
