Kay: I have just learned of Bob's passing. He was a mentor to me when I joined NFID, and became a good friend over the past 20 years, even after he and I left the organization. I shall miss his warmth, good humor and common sense.
My condolences to you, your daughters, and your grandchildren.

Kay and Family,
I am sorry to hear of Dr Gruninger's passing and have many fond memories of working with him here at Hennepin. He was always available to listen to my concerns and provide advice. I hope you are taking care of yourselves during this time. He was a special man who truly loved his family.

It has taken me some time to write something as this was a difficult loss for me. In particular, Dr. G as I fondly called him was like a second dad to me while I was growing up. He had a great smile and laugh. He loved to argue politics with me over dinner at his house. I didn't usually win but I sure gave it a good try.
He always loved to talk about the story of how CJ, Becca and I went out sailing and lost his keys in the water. Dr. G had to come help us bring the boat back to the Wayzata Yacht Club. I waited at the club while with his car keys at the dock. Soon the keys left my hands and dropped into the Wayzata Bay. These keys weren't just car keys - but keys to everything. We had to get a magnet to find the keys. He never let me live that one down.
There are so many other great memories. I will truly miss him.
In the words of Dr. Suess - "Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened." and that's how I feel - lucky that Dr. G was a part of my life.
Love - Mary

I knew Bob while we were both at Hennepin County Medical Center. While I never played golf with him, I did, on rare occasions, play (using the term loosely) poker with him and a few of our cronies. Despite his considerable interest in laboratory medicine, he always was able to make the leap to thinking about how the lab information affected the inividual patient, and was willing to discuss this and pursue it himself. He worked in an arena not lacking in persons with substantial ego strength, but he always seemed to behave in a kind and gentlemanly manner.

My Uncle Bob was a larger-than-life figure. As a young girl, I would eagerly anticipate his visits at our suburban home in NJ. He would roll up in his black Mercedes Benz—how chic!—and regale us with stories of his latest far-flung travels around the globe. He was so debonair and so much fun. He always sent postcards when he travelled—a practice he maintained all his life and one I really appreciated. His best life decision ever was to marry my Aunt Kay. In fact, we were worried that he might remain a bachelor all his life, but Kay saved the day. My sister Sandi and I (ages 11 and 12) remember the wedding well; our brother Andy (age 4) not as much. Uncle Bob lived his life to the fullest—a page we could all take from his book. My siblings and I have many cherished memories and send our heartfelt condolences to Aunt Kay and cousins CJ and Suzanne and their families. Love, Pam

Here is a photo of Dr. G - in his Carolina blue. Full of life and love, a quick wit with joking jabs at the ready, a fixer (my car…and other things), a doer…always willing to try new things, and welcoming and interested in learning about all of the happenings in my life…that was Dr. G. How fortunate I was to know him. His life has left an imprint on mine and I will hold the many memories of him forever in my heart.
I know that this is a widely used poem, but it seems so relevant when I think of him and my memories of sailing with him...I just had to share:
I am standing by the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. An object of beauty and strength, I stand and watch until at last she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sun and sky come down to mingle with each other.
Then someone at my side says, 'There she goes!
Gone where? Gone from my sight - that is all.
She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side
and just as able to bear her load of living freight to the places of destination.
Her diminished size is in me, not in her.
And just at the moment when someone at my side says, 'There she goes! ' ,
there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout : 'Here she comes!'
While death leaves heartache that is difficult to heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal. Wishing your family peace and comfort in the days, weeks, and months ahead.
Love and hugs to you all,
Michele

Hello Gruninger Family,
I am so sorry for your loss!
I believe Dr G and my dad are having a grand time with all their friends!
Thinking of you now and treasure the time I spent with Dr G when my dad was sick... We had lots of quiet moments, but lots of philosophical conversations about life and modern medicine in that hospital room. Dr G and I basically refused to leave my dad! Those memories will not be soon forgotten!
Love you all!
Peace and love!

Oh Bob, you left to soon. At Doug and Suzanes's wedding reception, Gary pulled a true prank on You. Bob said to Gary "I am going to get you back, maybe not today or tomorrow but I'll get you back". We always smile about that! We have wonderful memories. We enjoyed your trips to MN so we could go to the Twins game and the Saints game or just go out for dinner. I know our grandkids will miss you immensely as we will miss your friendly smile and kind words.
Rest in Peace Dear Bob!

Life is an adventure when you are with Bob. He won first place in the "take advantage of your opportunities" contest. What an inspiration. My fun memory is listening to my parents tell the tale of rescuing/watching Bob sail on a particularly windy afternoon on Wayzata Bay. My parents love to tell that tale of Bob and his friend and of course the post adventure party.
Bob was such a patient, encouraging Dad. He had a special way of helping the girls "do the right thing" and "learn their lessons" and "spread their wings and fly".
Do you remember CJ's first car? I will always think of Bob driving around in that car sporting the bumper sticker "SKI NAKED".
