Obituary of George Kendrick Summer

Dr. George Kendrick Summer, Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry and Pediatrics at
the University of North Carolina, died peacefully at UNC Hospital on July 8th in
Chapel Hill, North Carolina at the age of 92.
George is survived by his wife Betsy of 64 years and his children; Carol Velasco
(Lou), David Summer (Peg Gignoux); grandchildren, Aaron Summer, Matt Zachek
(Diana), Christy Zachek, Lauren Velasco, Louie Velasco, and step granddaughter,
Emily Wipper: great granddaughter, Ava Zachek; his sister Betty Hunt of Charlotte,
North Carolina and many wonderful nieces, and nephews.
George was born May 8th, 1923 in Cherryville, North Carolina to Thomas and Bessie
Summer. He graduated from the University of North Carolina with a BS in Chemistry
in 1944. He served in the Navy in the Pacific in World War Two. After the war he
attended Harvard Medical School, where he met his wife, and graduated in 1951.He
continued his post medical school training at Vanderbilt University, Wake Forest
University and the University of North Carolina.
He enjoyed a long and distinguished career on the faculty at the Medical School at
UNC until his retirement in 1988.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at The Pines at
Carolina Meadows for their wonderful care and support of George over the past
year.
A memorial service for George will be held at 2:00 on September 20, 2015 at Holy
Trinity Lutheran Church, 300 East Rosemary Street, Chapel Hill, NC 27514. If you
