William Stanton "Bill" Stewart April 3, 1925 - August 1, 2015 Chapel Hill Judge William Stanton Stewart, fondly known as "Bill", 90, died on August 1, 2015 after a period of declining health. He was born in Blakely, GA. Bill attended the Citadel at the age of 16, then went on to serve in the United States Navy as an officer. Following his service he attended Georgia Tech University earning a BS in Chemistry. He then attended Harvard Law School graduating near the top of his class in 1949. He was fond of saying that law schools in those days looked for students from diverse educational backgrounds, which he found to be a very good idea. Bill went on to a distinguished career beginning with the practice of law, election to the Recorder's Court as a Judge, then on to teach business law at the Kenan Flagler School at UNC. He also served as the Kenan Flagler Equal Opportunity Officer for a period of time. Bill was also instrumental in the founding of Central Carolina Bank, and served on its board for many years. He approached everything he did with the highest ethical standards. Judge Stewart is survived by his three children, Caroline Ann Stewart, William Stanton Stewart, Jr, and Mary Sterling Stewart, all of Chapel Hill, and six grandchildren: Robert House Stewart, Hunter McPherson Pedersen, Samuel Janney Stewart, Caroline Martha Mebane, Thomas Hall Mebane and Stewart Battle Mebane. He was preceded in death by his wife, Caroline House Stewart. A memorial service is scheduled for Thursday, August 13, 2015 the 3:00 PM at the Chapel of the Cross in Chapel Hill, NC. A reception and celebration of life will follow the service at the Chapel Hill Country Club, where Bill was a long time member and past president.
