Chapel Hill Linda Bridgers Daugherty, 69, passed away Monday, August 10th at her home in Chapel Hill. Linda was the daughter of Dorothy and Rupert Bridgers and grew up in Rowland, NC. She was an avid athlete in high school. She graduated from Western Carolina University and received her Masters in Social Work from Tulane University. After finishing her degree at Tulane she continued to work on the faculty of the Addiction Program at the university. She later returned to Raleigh, where she headed the Family Program at the Wake County Alcohol Treatment Center. She was a charter member of the NC Society for Clinical Social Work and, upon her later move to South Carolina, facilitated the founding SC Society for Clinical Social Work. During this period she was a mentor to many others in the profession. A devoted wife and mother, Linda spent the later part of her life living in England, Boston, and Canada with her family before returning to Chapel Hill in 2002. Linda was a wonderful storyteller, keeper of family history, an avid reader, and a superb cook. She was the heart and soul of her extended family. Linda is survived by her husband of 34 years, Richard, her son Chad of Chicago, IL, her three siblings: Charles Bridgers of Naples, FL, Robert Bridgers of North Myrtle Beach, SC, and Katherine Arnette of Dillon, SC., and countless other beloved family members. A memorial service will be held at The Chapel of the Cross in Chapel Hill (304 East Franklin Street) at 1 PM on Saturday, August 15th. This will be followed by a reception in the Chapel's Great Hall. An internment service will be held at 1 PM on Monday, August 17th at the Rowland Cemetery in Rowland, NC, which will be followed by a reception at Linda's childhood church, Ashpole Presbyterian Church in Rowland, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to WUNC, the local NPR station, or The Audubon Society. Walker's Funeral Home of Chapel Hill is honored to serve the Daugherty family.
