Obituary of Ruth Hopfield Alliger

Ruth Irene Hopfield Alliger died peacefully on September 1, 2015 in her home after a short illness. Ruth was born May 12, 1918 in Syracuse, New York to John Hopfield and Reine Coursen. She grew up in Berkeley, California as one of seven children. Ruth received her master's degree in Chemistry from Iowa University and taught high school chemistry for many years. After retiring, she was able to focus her time on family, gardening, and photography. She was a past president of her local chapter of American Association of University Women, and a member of Walnut Grove United Methodist Church in Hurdle Mills. She lived for the last 9 years at Beverwyck Retirement Community in Slingerlands, New York.
Ruth is survived by one brother, John Hopfield; her daughter Holly and husband John of Albany, NY; her daughter Carentan and husband Bob of Big Bay, Michigan; her son George and wife Beth of Albany, NY, and her daughter Julia and husband John of Hurdle Mills. She had eight grandchildren: Ilse Renner Rhoads, Soren Renner, George Antczak, Brian Antczak, Glen Alliger, Andrew Alliger, Gregory Alliger, and David Alliger, and five great-grandchildren. Her husband Glen died in 2004.
Graveside services will be held at Walnut Grove United Methodist Church in Hurdle Mills on October 9, 2015 at 4PM, with the Rev. Julia Alliger presiding. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts be directed to the Salvation Army in Ruth's memory.
