Obituary of Phyllis Cartner Vierra
Phyllis Cartner Vierra, 76, passed away at her home on Wednesday, July 24, 2019 after a long illness.
The oldest of four children, she was born August 19, 1942 in Davie County, NC, to Robert Cartner and Margaret Gibson Cartner. At 19 she married her husband, Bill and they were married 57 years, raising a son and a daughter. Phyllis worked for Durham Public Schools in the cafeteria at Northern High School. Phyllis loved to go to yard sales and her hobby was collecting pigs. She also loved to travel and spent a lot of time at the beach. She enjoyed working with children in the church nursery.
She is survived by her husband, Bill; son, Billy and wife Tammie; daughter, Stephanie Byrd and husband Johnny. Grandchildren include Amber Vierra, Matthew Szolnoki and Bradley Szolnoki and step-grandchildren including Chelsea Byrd, Kyle Byrd, Jessica Byrd and Trey Byrd. Phyllis is also survived by her siblings; Mary Frances Cartner, Bob Cartner and Jerry Cartner, as well as several wonderful sisters-in-law; Arbutus Gadd, Meleta Hunter and Pattie Cartner, along with many nieces and nephews.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her father, Robert and her mother, Margaret.
The family would like to thank Phyllis’ cousins Shirley Thorne and Jimmy Overcash and wife Carolyn, as well as her brother, Bob Cartner and wife Pattie for their many visits, phone calls and diligence in prayer.
A special thank you to the nurses, aids and social workers of Amedisys Hospice who cared for Phyllis so well over the last several months. The family would like to also thank Kim Pulliam for the love and care she showed Phyllis in her last months. Kim was truly a blessing to Phyllis and the family.
The family will be receiving friends at the home on Saturday, July 27th. Visitation will be Sunday, July 28, 2019 from 2-3:45 pm followed by a service at 4 pm at Walker’s Funeral Home in Hillsborough, NC. Entombment will be Monday, July 29th at 1 pm at Gesthemane Memorial Park in Newport, NC.
