Tom was a very close friend of mine through high school. He always knew how to make everyone around him laugh. I truly regret not staying in touch with him and will never forget the fun times we had. Anyone who has spent time with Tom would agree that the world lost a great person. Tom will be missed.

Tom had spent time at our home in McHenry. He was a friend of our son, Nicholas. When he played the piano for us we were blown away with his ability and talent.
We send our deepest sympathy to all of Tom’s family.

I can never forget Tom. I realize now, more than ever, that he was like a brother to me. No matter how much we argued, no matter how much we disagreed, we could never stop hanging around together, playing two-man baseball, riding bikes, playing those cheesy old computer games, quoting Peanuts comics, swinging, sliding, sometimes playing the piano, etc., etc., etc. I even remember having a pizza-eating contest once when we were very young. (I was amazed that my mom actually allowed us to eat that many slices, until I got older and realized she had cut the pizza into narrower pieces than usual!)
What I would give up now...to talk to him again, catch up on lost time, share stories, sit down and hear each other's piano music, and maybe even eat some more pizza. I don't even remember who won that eating contest, but it doesn't matter--in friendship, everyone wins. He had to be a true friend to put up with me. When we got older, I apologized to him for having been so harsh and judgmental, and he immediately expressed his forgiveness, no holds barred, no strings attached, no conditions, no anything. That's the kind of friend Thomas Walter Amstadt was.
A while back, I tried to find him on Facebook but couldn't. Actually, I think I may have just missed his profile, because I didn't expect him to be living out east. (I saw a Tom Amstadt who looked a lot like him, but thought it couldn't have been him.) Even though I can't spend time with this honorary brother of mine anymore, I want you, as his family, to know: I'm still sorry for starting those arguments with him, which I'm sure caused a lot of stress for the rest of you, too...I'm here if any of you wants to reach out for support...and I told my family, so they could join in praying for the Comfort of the Holy Ghost over you all.
