Obituary of Patricia Mize Compton

Patricia Mize Compton Patricia "Pat" Mize Compton died on September 29th, 2017 surrounded by her beloved family. She was eighty years old. Pat was born in Daytona Beach, Florida to Ardelia and R. H. Mize. She attended Seabreeze High School, and High Point College where she received a BA in Music. A life long learner, she later earned a Master's degree in education from North Carolina Central University. Her first job was as a social worker in Johnston county. After her marriage to Joseph W. Compton brought her to Orange county, she taught music in Orange county schools from 1965 to 1968. In 1970 she began a long career as an educator for Person county schools, teaching kindergarten, retiring in 1998. As a member of Cedar Grove UMC, Pat sang in the choir for many years. After retiring, she moved to Hillsborough UMC, serving in the choir and handbells. Pat is survived by her daughter Anne Compton Garner and her husband John of Hillsborough, NC, her son Joseph (Jay) Woods Compton Jr, of Cedar Grove NC. Her grandchildren are Chris Compton and his wife Krystal of Cedar Grove NC, Jonathan Compton of Hastings NE, and Melissa Compton Hawkins and her husband James of Hillsborough NC. Her great-grandchildren are Chris Compton and Lizzy Whitt. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Bill Shelton of Camarillo CA, brother Roy Mize and his wife Catherine of Palo Alto CA, and sister Susan Simpson and her husband Art of Daytona Beach Fl. Pat was predeceased by her sister Ann Shelton of Camarillo, CA. A memorial service will be held on Sunday October 1st, 2017 at 5:00pm in Hillsborough United Methodist Church, 130 West Tryon Street Hillsborough, North Carolina 27278. The family will receive visitors in the fellowship hall from 3:30pm to 4:45pm prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the National MS Society, the American Cancer Society, or your favorite charity.
