Obituary of Charles Edward Mauer

Charles Edward “Charlie” Mauer, 88, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, went to be with His Lord on September 11, 2023. He passed away peacefully in his sleep after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Charles was born in Hamden, New York on March 24, 1935. He was the late son of Irwin George and Gertrude Bailey (Gert) Mauer. Charlie moved to Chapel Hill when he was in his teens and graduated from Chapel Hill High. In high school, he met Glenda Yow, and they married on April 10, 1954.

He loved his family, working in law enforcement, dancing, working with his hands, playing cornhole, the UNC Tar Heels and being a member of Antioch Baptist Church. Charlie worked many football games and basketball games over the years. He was very outgoing and knew almost everyone in Orange County. He worked for 25 years at UNC – Chapel Hill as a police officer, rising to the rank of Major. Charles then served as deputy sheriff and bailiff with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office for 26 years. He was 83 years old when he retired from the Sheriff’s department. He, however, remained active with them until the beginning of this year.

Charles is survived by his two daughters, Linda Campbell and husband Andy of Chapel Hill and Brenda Meriwether and husband Scott of Oxford; grandson Jonathon Charles (JC) Binder and wife Alexandra of Mebane and his great-granddaughter Samantha; his sister Shirley Maddry and husband John of Chapel Hill and his brother Richard Mauer of Alaska; numerous wonderful nieces, nephews, and cousins. Charles was greeted in heaven by his wife Glenda, grandson Joshua Binder and brother David Mauer.

Visitation will be at 12:00pm, on Friday, September 15; funeral services will be at 2:00pm. All services will be held at Antioch Baptist Church.

The family would like to extend an invitation to join them in the fellowship hall for refreshments after interment.
