Obituary of Joseph Luis Matos

Please share a memory of Joseph to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Joseph Luis Matos, a resident of Chapel Hill, NC, formerly of Bluffton, SC, and Eastchester, NY, passed away at home on Saturday, September 9, 2023 at 86 years of age. Joe, an only child, was born in Carolina, Puerto Rico on October 12, 1936 to Jose and Maria Matos. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 62 years, Mary Evelyn Matos, and by his three sons Robert John (Laura) of Springfield, NJ, Joseph Edward (John, deceased) of Albany, NY, and Michael Christian (Angela) of Pittsboro, NC. He is also survived by his five grandchildren, Marian of Pittsboro, NC, Robbie, Marcella, Adam, and Sabrina of Springfield, NJ.

Joseph grew up in Puerto Rico where he met his future wife, Mary, a New Yorker, who was taking college courses there. The couple was married on August 27, 1961 and moved to Queens, NY. In 1967 they purchased a home in Eastchester, NY where they raised their family until moving to Greenburgh, NY in 1997. Through the years Joe held positions in finance and administration for several entities. Upon retirement, they moved to Bluffton, South Carolina where they were active participants in several senior groups for many years. Joe and Mary moved to Chapel Hill, NC in 2013 to be closer to family.

Joe will surely be remembered for his calm demeanor in the face of any challenges, his ability to laugh in most any situation, and for his devotion to his family. Above all, whether at the beach, on vacation, or camping with the Boy Scouts, Joesph built countless memories with those who loved him that will endure forever.

In the last years of his life, Joe found pleasure in a simpler way of life and enjoyed attending his grandchild’s dance recitals, visiting New Jersey, and hearing about the adventures of his other grandchildren in New Jersey and Maine.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 15, 2023, at 2:30p.m., at the St. John Fisher Chapel located in St. Thomas More Catholic Church Community in Chapel Hill, NC. A light reception will immediately follow the service.

Walker's Funeral Home of Chapel Hill is assisting the family.
