Obituary of Lawrence Andrew Champion MD
Please share a memory of Lawrence to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Larry Champion (68), beloved husband of Karen Sanders Raleigh, was born in Mckeesport, PA to parents James and Margaret Y. (Dobie) Champion. The family moved to Oshkosh, WI, where Larry graduated from Oshkosh High School in 1965. Larry attended the University of Wisconsin as an undergraduate and continued at UW through medical school and residency.
Larry moved to the warmer climate of Chapel Hill in 1975, and established a private practice in psychiatry. He had admitting privileges at what is now Duke Regional Hospital where he also provided psychiatric consults at the request of the medical staff. Larry retired reluctantly in 2014 due to a series of medical issues.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents and his stepson, Adam Sanders Raleigh. He is survived by his wife, Karen, brother Ken Champion, children Robert, John and Beth Anne Champion (Kevin Fischer), their mother, Margaret K. Champion, and his granddaughters, Ava and Annabelle Fischer. Dogs, MacKenzie and MacDobie are already missing their buddy.
By his nature as well as by his training, Larry was a wonderful listener who could add one word or one question that clarified whatever troubling issue he and his patient were discussing. He was especially loving and supporting to Karen when she lost her son.
Visitation will be from 1:00 until 3:00 on Friday, February 12 followed by a private burial at Chapel Hill Cemetery. According to Larry's wishes, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the charity of your choice in Larry's name.
Walker Funeral Home in Chapel Hill is providing services to the family.
