Born in Statesville, NC on December 21st, 1942 to Blaine and Inez Shaver. Selby worked on the family dairy farm till he left for college at Lees McRae and then the University of North Carolina where he graduated in 1965 with a degree in Business.
Selby was a star basketball player in high school and continued in college. He was an avid college sports fan and attended the UNC basketball, football, and baseball games.
Selby was successful in business as well. He held executive positions at Sears, IBM, and Excel Communications. He was well respected in his field and an inspiration and mentor to many colleagues, friends and family.
Selby had an avid interest in antiques and amassed a gameboard collection that was published in a book, The Art of the Game.
Selby retired in 2001 to Warren County, NC on 300 acres of pure heaven! He planted a garden that could feed an army and grew the best cantaloupes. His love of animals was rekindled. He bought horses and rescued dogs-six in all-Samantha, Benton, Francesca, Gabriella, Annie and Peanut. He loved to sit on the porch and listen to the rain on the tin roof, watch the wild turkeys roam the pasture and sometimes catch a glimpse of the albino deer that found a home there.
He was preceded in death by his Father and Mother, Blaine and Inez Shaver, and Brother, Jerry Shaver.
He was both tender and strong and a hero to those who knew him and loved him. His generosity was never-ending. He will leave us with many cherished memories.
