Obituary of John William Blackwood

Chapel Hill - John William Blackwood, 75 of Chapel Hill passed away Friday, April 14, 2017 at his home with his family by his side. John was born January 22, 1942 in Orange County, NC to the late John Hocutt and Rachel Nalls Blackwood. He was the husband of Diane Suitt Blackwood of the home, whom survives. John was the former Chief of Police for the town of Carrboro, and was employed with Durham Regional Hospital as the Security Supervisor prior to his retirement. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Chapel Hill, and was known as an avid fisherman and outdoorsman; he loved gardening and he loved children. He was a diehard Tar Heel fan. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his daughters: Renee Yates and Sharon Blackwood, and his brothers: Donnie and Roy Blackwood. Left to cherish John's memory is his wife, Diane Blackwood, his sons: David Blackwood of Carrboro, NC, Mark Blackwood of NC, Trent Evans and fiancé Kellie Scott of Raleigh, NC, Todd Evans and fiancé Betty Evans of Roxboro, NC, Michael Evans and Beth Maynard of Raleigh, NC, Anthony Evans and fiancé Kim Lynch of Chapel Hill, NC and Justin Evans and wife Patty of Durham, NC, his daughter, Amanda Evans and Tim Auble of Chapel Hill, NC, his sisters: Melba Wright and husband Fred of Roxboro, NC, JoAnne Gooch and husband Robert of Chapel Hill, NC and Bonnie Pittard of Raleigh, NC, eight grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren. The family will receive friends, Sunday, April 16, 2017 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Walker's Funeral Home of Chapel Hill. Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM, Monday, April 17, 2017 at Bethel Baptist Church, 9326 Bethel Hickory Grove Rd. Chapel Hill, NC. Rev. Elmer Joyner officiating. Interment will follow the service in the church cemetery.
