Dorothy Rose Otho Whitt, 85, of Chapel Hill, NC died on Saturday, December 31, 2011. She was born on October 13, 1926 in Lubbock and raised in Midland, Texas. 'Dot' was a devoted spouse; loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother; energetic homemaker; and community volunteer. She cultivated many friendships due to her friendly, positive outlook and caring demeanor, and love for maintaining communication as life as a military wife took her from Louisiana to Alaska, California to Virginia, and Texas to Iceland before she retired in San Antonio.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Lt. Col. James Andrew Whitt, USAF (Ret.) and her parents, Gertrude E. Bertram and Oscar Otho, Sr. She is survived by a brother, Oscar Otho, Jr., and his wife, Virginia ('Goldie') of Midland, Texas; son, J. Kenneth Whitt, and daughter-in-law, Marlene E. Whitt of Chapel Hill; a grandson, Ronald K. Whitt of Atlanta, Georgia.; a granddaughter, Lori Rachele Dwyer, who lives in Hillsborough with her husband, Scott M. Dwyer, and two great-grandchildren, Ryan Patrick Dwyer and Kevin Michael Dwyer; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and their families whose lives she enjoyed following.
The funeral service is to be held on Thursday, January 5, 2011 at 2 p.m. at the Union Grove United Methodist Church of Hillsborough, North Carolina.
