Orange County Chapel Hill - Mr. Homer Ruffin Tapp, 90, passed away peacefully at his home on January 23, 2012 after several months of declining health. Homer was born August 13, 1921 in Orange County to the late Henry Ruffin Tapp and Lillian Durham Tapp. Homer graduated from Hillsborough High School and then served in the U.S. Navy. He was deployed to Pacific Theater during World War II. Upon his return from the war he and his wife established their home in the New Hope Community. He was an avid dairy farmer for many years. After raising his family on the farm, he and Christine retired from farming and Homer decided to try his engineering skills and then worked for the Liggett Myers Power Plant until his retirement. Homer was an active volunteer in the New Hope Fire Dept. for many years. He cherished his many friendships there, also his neighborhood friends and his church family. Homer was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Christine Van Vynckt Tapp, a grandson, Ron Pittman, and his brother, Neal Durham Tapp. Surviving are his six children, sons: Jack Tapp, Jimmy Tapp, David Tapp, and Andy Tapp; daughters: Becky Tapp Dickey and Margaret Anne Tapp. Twelve grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. The family will receive visitors at the Walker's Funeral Home in Hillsborough from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Thursday, January 26, 2012. No visitors will be received at the home. Services will be held at New Hope Presbyterian Church at 2:00 PM on Friday, January 27, 2012. Officiating in the service will be the Reverend Ray Mims. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Flowers are accepted or, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the New Hope Church Building Fund or the Amedisys Hospice Service in memory of Homer Tapp. We wish to thank the nurses from Amedisys Hospice for the wonderful care to Homer during this period.
