Obituary of Barbara Loda

Please share a memory of Barbara to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Barbara Ann Loda, 84, of Chapel Hill, NC passed away on Sunday, December 29. Born on April 15, 1940 in Crawfordsville, Indiana to the late Luke White and Margaret Zechiel White, Barbara grew up in Covington, Indiana and moved south to attend college at Vanderbilt University. She enjoyed a semester abroad in Aix-En-Provence, France, where she was, per her sister, nicknamed "the waterfall of laughter" by the housestaff there. It was at Vanderbilt that she met her husband Frank, who was attending medical school.

Barbara taught eight grade English in Bethesda, Maryland after graduating Vanderbilt. Frank and Barbara moved to Chapel Hill, NC in 1964 and have remained there since, except for a year spent in Sheffield, England prior to starting a family and a year in Nairobi, Kenya in 1982. She loved to travel and encouraged her children and grandchildren to travel and enjoy different cultures and opportunities around the world. She remained in contact with many friends she met from her time abroad. An avid socialite, Barbara was always dressed and ready for a good dinner party. She enjoyed the symphony and theater productions in Durham, Raleigh and Chapel Hill.

Barbara is preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Dr. Frank Aloysius Loda. She is survived by her brother, Kip White (Jayne) and her sister Patti Miyagi (Kazu) both of Covington, Indiana, along with her children, Dr. Margaret Amanda Loda, and her husband, Brent P. Boger, of Lexington, NC, David Gregory Loda, and his wife, Zuzana, of Olomouc, Czech Republic, Matthew Aloysius Loda, of Folly Beach, SC; and her grandchildren, Amanda Brooke Boger, Natalie Blyth Boger and Thomas Benjamin Loda.

A gathering will be held at Walker's Funeral Home, 11680 US Hwy 15-501 North in Chapel Hill on Saturday, January 4, 2025 from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm, with a graveside service at a later date in Covington, Indiana, where she will be buried next to her parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the North Carolina Symphony.

The Loda family is under the care of Walker’s Funeral Home of Chapel Hill.
