Obituary of Susan Louise Fleming (Van Deusen)

Susan Louise Fleming (Van Deusen) passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 16, 2024 in Durham, North Carolina at the age of 78.
Susan was born on February 20, 1946 in Evanston, Illinois to Alfred Cyrus and Louise Henrietta Van Deusen (Moosman) Susan grew up in Evanston, Illinois with her parents, twin brother Thomas, and her older brother Geoff. Susan attended high school at Regina Dominican High School in Wilmette, Illinois and nursing school at St.Therese School of Nursing in Waukegan, Illinois. She married Thomas Fleming in May of 1969, and they settled in Glenview, Illinois for more than forty years.
Susan made friends easily and kept them for a lifetime. She maintained friendships with friends from elementary school, high school, and nursing school. Her lifelong friends were like sisters.
Susan spent time as a hospital nurse in the Chicago area and in Baltimore, Maryland. Susan was proud to be a skilled and compassionate caregiver. She put nursing to the side for a while to raise her children, Michael and Alison. She returned to work as a private nurse and then, as a staff nurse helping care for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's patients at the House of Welcome in Northfield, Illinois for 20 years.
She moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 2010 to spend her retirement with her daughter, Alison and her granddaughter, Reagan. She also traveled frequently to San Francisco, California to visit her son, Michael and granddaughters Nora and Edith. Susan also enjoyed volunteering at the Holy Infant Community Garden and various other volunteer activities.
Susan is survived by her twin brother, Thomas Van Deusen, her older brother, Geoff Van Deusen, her husband, Thomas Fleming as well as her two children Michael Fleming and Alison Fleming, and her three granddaughters, Nora, Reagan and Edith.
A funeral will be held on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Infant Catholic Church in Durham, NC. A Memorial will be held in the Glenview, Illinois area in April 2025.
