For almost 3 decades, David was a neighbor, colleague, collaborator, and most importantly, dear friend. He was a dedicated physician who valued science and was always striving to increase his knowledge and skills as a clinician and researcher. He was a caring and generous person who valued the importance of friendship and family. He loved the outdoors and together we enjoyed hiking in the North Carolina mountains. He had a wry sense of humor, and I will miss our many conversations about the latest discoveries in medicine, national politics, and the state of UNC basketball.

Visited Mom and Dad this weekend and we composed the following for use in the obituary doc, or as you see fit: Mom and Dad feel that David considered them like parents. Their home was David’s safe port for unconditional love, and a place to recharge and refuel. Mom and Dad loved these visits. Dad remembers David consulting him for career advice, and Mom felt like they were second parents, never substituting for his actual parents. When Mary entered David’s life, they welcomed her warmly, and consider a member of the Sheps family. They wish Mary love and strength.

Mary,
’m so sorry to hear this. He’s had a rough time the last few years and yes, weaker and more frail. I’ve worked with David you and for a long time. I valued my relationship with David, visits to your home, him coming to our office etc.
My condolences to you and your family. You’ll be in my thoughts and prayers.

“Let me tell you ‘bout my best friend”.
First came the voice, and then the prodigious memory. And the laughter.
The 60’s and folksinging were a natural fit for David. His was a voice, a nasal twangy voice when he wanted, that blended smoothly with “Green Mountain Boys” harmony.
Suzi & I recall evenings in his father’s office, guitar in my arms, the three of us hopelessly attempting to compose “folk songs”. David’s strong, honest, “rural mountain” evoking voice just stopped us cold. Mouths agape, we just listened to our friend as he sang “A long black veil”, as well as other a cappella offerings.
David’s forays back to the city during breaks from Med School would find him in our apartment regaling us with songs he had heard just once on his drive from Chapel Hill…infusions by radio, it seemed.
And the time he entered our home reciting dialogue, almost broadcasting as story teller…he had just seen “The Graduate”.
“Plastics!”. He had us in the palm of his hand; and when we finally saw the movie ourselves it was like attending the performance for the second time.
And his humor. Our son Scottie, age 4 at the time, presented a booboo’ed index finger to “Dr David”. David, his face all serious and professional, gazed at the tyke and said quite calmly, clearly: “I don’t do fingers”. The kid felt better.
And his generosity, “gifting” us (pay me back when and if and however much you can spare) his precious “pickle”, a green 1970 Fiat Spyder wannabe.
And his unrelenting requests at every visit for me to play the Ala Turca movement from a Mozart sonata…kept me sharp.
And sharing confidences. And officiating as our “Best Man”. Always.
With love,
Marco & Suzi

Dear Mary,
I was so sorry to learn that David has passed away. He put up such a valiant fight during the last years of his life. You have been such an amazing partner and caregiver. I don’t know anyone, including myself, who could match your sustaining love, loyalty, and devotion. David was truly fortunate to have you as his wife. I hope you will let us know if there is anything we can do to make your adjustment to being without David a little more tolerable. Jim and I will always remember the times we have spent with the two of you over the years, especially in the mountains. It will be different without David, but we will continue this special friendship. We love you, Mary.

Dear Mary,
I am sad to learn of David's passing. Please accept my deepest sympathies.
David was a very special person. We first met, I believe, more than 25 years ago. At the time, we were both investigators on the Women's Health Initiative trial. In fact, we were co-authors on a 2002 NEJM paper examining the impact of walking on health. Given our mutual interests in health behaviors and CVD, David often called upon me to review submissions for Psychosomatic Medicine. During David's second stint at UF, we had the opportunity to do some team teaching, and I became a regular contributor to his courses on the epidemiology of chronic illnesses. I can still recall the many thoughtful interactions that we had with students over one of his favorite topics--how an individual's personal behaviors contribute to the development of heart disease. His breadth and depth of knowledge was amazing, and it was a real treat for the students (and me) to be in the classroom with him.
With David's declining health, I know the last few years have been difficult for both of you, and I can only imagine how hard his passing must be for you. I hope that the knowledge that David made many important contributions not just to his discipline but also to the careers of his students and colleagues will be a source of pride and comfort to you. David was indeed a special person.
Please know that Kathy and I are thinking of you and are fondly recalling the times we spent with you and David.
Sincerely,
Mike

Dear Mary:
Thank you for sharing this deeply sad news. Sending our condolences to you and the children May David's memory be a blessing.
I am grateful that I spent the time with him in New York City (I think it was around 2010) when we could reconnect when his health was strong.
Will there be a Zoom link to the November 10 memorial service? We are both unable to attend to in-person but would like to join by Zoom.
Sending our love and support.

We are heartbroken. It was our pleasure to help you all during those times. We are going to miss both of you terribly. Sure hope we get to see you when you're back up to take care of things. (We are being very discriminating!). And what a wonderful obituary - both personal and professional. I knew some of that, but you would never know it from him. Have you thought about sharing it on the Stonebridge page? I would be happy and proud to do it, but only with your permission.
Keep in touch,
Mark and Cathy.

Yes, very sad indeed. David was my first friend at med school. I always enjoyed his company, his modest reserve, his sense of humor - and he was so smart!
Requiescat in pacem.

I met David as interns in medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in NYC in 1969 and we remained good friends until now. We shared both happy and rough times together and helped each other manage the difficult transition from medical school students to doctors responsible for the lives of our patients. Many challenging experiences emerged which we shared on our rotations especially at Elmhurst Hospital in Queens. David was always soft spoken and loved our private jokes about daily struggles. We would often say “we can’t believe we did the whole thing” which wound up on my wedding invitation. He mused about having a Saab turbo and his motorcycle which I tried to caution him about its bad safety record. Although we lived in different cities and states his face lit up when we were able to get together. We shared a keen academic interest in the effects of emotional stress on cardiovascular disease. David gave a talk at my hospital in Miami and I wrote a chapter in his book on post heart attack medical care. With Mary by his side David experienced the love and caring that he wrote were essential to adapting to personal and medical challenges. I am comforted that he is resting in peace now. I miss him greatly however.
