i really was able to get to know Wayne as we waited at RDU for for our flight to London just this July 19. We landed in London, and through our jet-lagged haze managed to get off the plane, get luggage and handle customs. We shared many meals in London and in Ely, where we were the Chapel of the Cross Choir-the choir in residence for the week, which gave us the chance to search for good restaurants and walk back to our hotel together. We learned that we attended Mrs. White's nursery school a few years apart, and were able to connect on many Chapel Hill memories. That was a really amazing bonding moment. We flew home separately, and I had no idea that I would not see him again at choir, or in this life. May he rest in peace and rise in glory. Margo MacIntyre

We at E54 were so so sorry to hear about Wayne's untimely passing. He has always been such a wonderful neighbor and always had a kind word to say whenever we crossed paths.

To Lantz and all the family, I was so saddened to learn of Wayne's passing through one of "the Youth Group kids" from mid-70s at University Baptist. It's impossible to capture the sweetness of those days as we all helped each other grow up. Wayne was so fun, funny, gentle, kind, and warm. He was a few years ahead of me, so we weren't in school together--just at church where he was always just. So. Nice to my angst-ridden adolescent self. Years later, in Fall 1984, our paths unexpectedly crossed at Belks (at University Mall) as I was passing through town. It had been 10 years since our last meeting, but we immediately recognized each other and started chattering. I remember him with deep fondness and appreciation for his brightness and positive unconventionality. Across the years, as my thoughts and memories conjured him up, I have always found myself smiling and patting my heart. He was a lovely force. Love, Nancy Poe

I too have such wonderful memories of Wayne and his family. He and Lantz were part of that very special youth group at University Baptist Church and I was fortunate enough to be their minister. His gentleness, his love, his sweet spirit were gifts to all of us. I thought of him recently and realized that we had not run into each other for a while--as we often did--so I was so sad when I received this news from Mim Sapp Dyer, another one of that magic group. Love to all the Hollands and UBC.
