Obituary of James Harris Altman

Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

James Harris Altman, 70, passed away on September 23, 2024, in Durham, NC. Born on December 12, 1953, James, affectionately known as Jimmy, was known for his vibrant spirit and hearty laugh. He leaves behind a legacy of love and steadfast beliefs, always eager to share his thoughts and passion with those around him.

Jimmy proudly served in the Marines from 1974 to 1976, a period of his life that instilled in him a profound sense of discipline and camaraderie. After his military service, he dedicated many years to GKN as a machine setter. Upon retirement, Jimmy embraced a leisurely lifestyle, often joking that "every day was Saturday."

His personal life was filled with joy and adventure, from playing golf and video games to restoring and riding motorcycles. Jimmy's love for his motorcycles was only matched by his devotion to his wife, his family, and his dogs, all central figures in his life.

He is survived by his loving wife, Deborah; brother, Jerry (Susie); sister, Diane (Randy); sons, Scott and Jason (Missy); stepchildren, Christine (Adam) and Ryan (Katie); and numerous grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his stepfather and mother, Marvin and Lu Burbage, and father, Leverne Altman.

A memorial service will be held at Walker's Funeral Home, 304 W. Center St., Mebane, NC 27302, on September 26, 2024. Viewing will be from 12pm to 1:45pm followed by a service at 2pm. Interment will take place at Oakwood Cemetery in Mebane after the service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Shriner's Children's Hospital or Tunnels2Towers (T2T) organizations that reflect his spirit of generosity and community support. Jimmy's memory and spirit will be cherished and remembered by all who knew him.
