CHAPEL HILL— Edward Harvey "Sonny" Douglas, 93, died Monday, June 11, 2012 at his home. Born in Chapel Hill, Sonny was the son of the late Will and Addie Riley Douglas. Sonny served his country in the U.S Army 27th Med Evac Unit during World War II traveling through North Africa, Italy, Southern and Central France and finally Germany. Sonny returned to Chapel Hill and started working at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the Housing area. In 1950 he married Laura Mae Harward where they lived west of Carrboro ever since. Sonny retired from the University in 1980 only to return working part-time until 1990. He was predeceased by 3 brothers and 5 sisters.
Surviving are his wife of almost 62 years, Laura Mae Harward Douglas, his daughter, Jennifer Douglas Turner and her husband Cliff Turner, granddaughters Meredith Turner and Carsyn Turner, all of Chapel Hill. He is also survived by his sister Dorothy Ritchie of Mebane. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at 12pm to 2pm Saturday, June 16, 2012 at Bethel Baptist Church at 9326 Bethel-Hickory Grove Ch Rd in Chapel Hill. Funeral Services will follow at 2pm at the church with the Rev. Donald Cason officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in the church cemetery. Following the service, the family will greet friends in the fellowship hall where refreshments will be served.
Flowers or donations to Bethel Baptist Church are acceptable.
