Obituary of Susan Meyer
Please share a memory of Susan to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Susan Jordan Meyer passed away peacefully at UNC Hospital, in Hillsborough, NC, on October 21, 2023. She was 73.
Susan was born on January 15, 1950, in Hamlet, NC, to Dorris and Katherine Jordan. She graduated from Hamlet High School in 1968 before earning an associate’s degree from King’s College in Charlotte, NC.
Susan lived in the Chapel Hill, NC, area for most of her life. Before her son was born, she worked for UNC’s Dental Research Center. After his birth, she kept a small daycare before joining Clinical Psychology Services, where she was described as “the backbone of the office.” In her late career, she also worked at Harrington Bank and UNC General Administration.
Susan was exceptionally kind and generous. A life-long volunteer, she watched children at Chapel of the Cross while their families attended services, and she assisted teachers at her son’s schools, Pittsboro Primary and Horton Middle. She rocked babies in the NICU at UNC Hospital and visited nursing homes with her certified therapy dog, Bentley. Though she lived frugally, she donated to many charities every year.
Susan was adventurous and loved to travel, especially on cruises. She was an expert seamstress and a great cook. Across the homes, condos, and apartments where she lived over the years, she decorated beautifully, entertained warmly, and kept vibrant, immaculate gardens. Her friends and family always looked forward to receiving elaborate and thoughtful cards from her for every occasion and sometimes “just because.”
Susan is survived by her son, Jordan Meyer, daughter-in-law, Laura Exline, and granddaughter, Clara Meyer, of Chapel Hill, NC; her brother and sister-in-law Fred and Karen Jordan, of Hillsborough, NC; and her nephews and nieces Raymond, Scott, Amanda, Scarlett, Rebekah, and their children.
A funeral service will take place on November 3 at 1:30pm at Chapel of the Cross in Chapel Hill. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Susan’s life. In lieu of flowers, please continue Susan’s spirit of generous giving.
