Carol is a model of an ideal sister-in-law. She made me feel “at home” in her presence from the beginning. She was kind, thoughtful and compassionate. Carol was a source of food for the mind, body and spirit. She preached and demonstrated the healing power of forgiveness. She was a source of guidance, support, encouragement to live my authentic self, and a friend for life.
Reminiscing on some of the many memorable moments we shared including: chatting, teaching/learning (“Live in the present”), inspirational reading (Eckhart Tolle, Wayne Dwyer), laughing at funny family experiences (“Justin, look at the situation I’m in”), watching hilarious sit-coms while we ate together, as well as sharing the tears. One of most endearing moments is hearing Carol clearly say the words to me during her final hours “I am at peace”, and this gives me great comfort. I know that Carol’s legacy will continue to inspire long after she is gone.
Thank you Sean, for giving me not just a “sister-in-law”, but as expressed by Carol herself, truly a “sister”!

"Life is truly about the legacy & love you leave behind. My sister embodied what it means to love. Sometimes tough love with her extreme honesty, which may be hard to hear, but you know that you needed to hear those words. She created peace amongst family disagreements, playing a true big sister to me with her high level of achievement, inspiring ambition, and her encouraging words that have changed my life. Her life was fulfilling, and she now leaves reminders of love and life in every one of us."

Eulogy for Dr Carol Ann Marie Henry- Smith, MD
Carol Ann Marie Henry- Smith in 55 years and 29 days lived a full marathon life which cannot be calculated in years and length of days, but rather in the depth of life she lived. She did all she was purposed to accomplish in fine style and with great aplomb in the service of her Creator, her family, her country of birth, and by extension the United States of America.
The metaphor of Life as running a marathon is one which I will use to describe Ann-Marie’s life. As the daughter of George Henry and Beulah Harvey, she began the race in Kingston, Jamaica on September 1, 1968. She was hospitalized with severe pneumonia at a few weeks of age, but with her fighting spirit, she recovered fully after 30 days and overcame the first hurdle!
Despite early obstacles, Carol Ann-Marie graduated from Vere Technical High School in Clarendon, Jamaica, where she was also deputy Head Girl. Since those teen years, she subscribed to the mantra: “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; teach him to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” In 1985, Carol Ann-Marie was the first recipient of the scholarship established by commencement speaker, Ronald McNair, the astronaut who died in the Space shuttle Challenger accident in 1986. In preparing for her final examination, she received extra tutoring in Chemistry from another teacher who later became her mother-in-law. She was such a good student in Home Economics that after graduation she was invited to join the teaching staff at her Alma Mater in the Home Economics Department. After completing this first leg of the race, she migrated to the USA in 1989 where she continued the race and ongoing training.
With perseverance and focus, and maintaining a resilient mindset she overcame hurdles to further success. She entered Central Connecticut State University and she worked throughout her studies, at the Connecticut State Labor Department, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology.
Ann Marie was not just a student at High School and University. She was also involved in the programs of the church, where she met Sean. Four years later they sealed their love in marriage on August 18, 1991 in Hartford, Connecticut.
With unflinching determination Ann-Marie continued the race as she travelled to Mexico where she obtained a medical degree from the Universidad Autonoma de Tamaulipas in Tampico, Mexico, returning to the United States to obtain a Family Medicine Specialty at St Joseph’s Medical Center, Yonkers, NY. She later received a Fellowship to pursue Geriatric Medicine at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem, NC. She received acclamations and awards including The Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database Recognition Award, Certified Medical Director from the American Medical Directors Association. Based on her extensive training, Dr Henry-Smith provided care to long term patients for 13 years mostly in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area also known as the Research Triangle.
Along the route, she experienced several highs in addition to her wedding. Eleven years after marriage they had their first child Amery, followed by Brendan, 3 years later. She was an example of a good home maker, wife and mother. Along with her husband Sean, she was totally involved in her children’s academic, social, emotional and spiritual development. Her immediate family were among her biggest cheerleaders and motivators along the path.
Her coaches included her high school teachers, Pastors, friends who gave selflessly, some of whom are present here today, her running partner, Sean, family members, her colleagues and many more. These individuals were also committed to the race and spurred her on!
And, what were her other sources of strength for the marathon of life? Firstly, she had an unswerving faith in a God who walks with us “Giving himself away, Building what eyes could never see, Crying for those who cried”
Secondly, she found an outlet for her love of music, singing in church from childhood and continuing her music ministry here in the USA in Connecticut and NC, uplifting others spiritually. The ups and downs she encountered also provided food for her mind and spirit, in addition to her determination.
She discovered many gems along the route that helped to give her peace and hope. Here are a few of them in the form of quotes:
“If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at will change.” Wayne Dyer
“Forgive others, not because they deserve it, but because you deserve peace.” Jonathon Lockwood Huie
And, her favourite prayer was The Serenity Prayer: “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time, enjoying one moment at a time; accepting hardship as a pathway to peace…”
Dr. Henry-Smith had a passion for learning and sharing health and wellness information with others and practicing healthy lifestyle as evidenced in her diet, regular exercise pattern, vigorous workouts, bicycle riding with her family and running. It was therefore not a surprise to us when in 2012 she ran the West Virginia Marathon and the Tar Heel 10 Miler Race in Chapel Hill. That year, at the 9th mile (the iconic Laurel St Hill), of the Tar Heel 10 Miler Race, she saw Sean up ahead teetering across the road, from side-to-side. With a burst she caught up to him, checked to ensure he was ok (how thoughtful---Ha, Ha), then kicked towards the finish as she dashed past him, leaving him in the dust! When they came home, the family noticed how he was huffing and puffing, while she was breathing effortlessly although tired. She proudly and joyfully revels in this fact that she beat him, although he had been training and running much longer than she had.
Just as Ann-Marie prepared and performed in running races, she prepared and performed in the race of life. Throughout her illness, her determination to continue the race did not waver, until the end of the race on September 30, 2023.
Dr Carol Ann Marie Henry-Smith leaves husband Dr. Sean Smith of 32 years, sons Amery and Brendan, bonus daughter Yainnia (Haley), Mother Beulah, siblings Devon, Peaches, Errol, Winston, Raymond, Alma, Tasha, Tina, and Daniel, Aunts, nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends, colleagues, church family. She is preceded in death by her father.
In-spite of ups and downs, she crossed the finish line without quitting. She heeded Paul’s injunction in Hebrews 12:1, 2 “Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith”. Myrna E. Hope Bernard expands on this statement in her poem entitled “To Be Continued”, by saying:
“For the Author and Finisher of our faith
The Life-giver, the Resurrector; the Redeemer
Has promised to preserve
Those whose dedication page
Ascribe to him their existence
And throughout the volume of years
God’s penmanship and style
Can be discerned in talents displayed
And services rendered.”
Carol Ann-Marie Henry-Smith is a treasured gift to us all, she fulfilled her purpose well - the Untethered Soul.

It a shocking sad news.
I met Carol in July 2006, we both came from New York after finishing family practice residency to start fellowship in geriatric in internal medicine program. We had something in common even before we started
she has family with 2 young kids and I was single at the time. if I ever complain that I am busy she uses to tell me how her day goes by starting as early at 5 am. Then I had to stop complaining.
She asked me many times not to fall sleep in the education session, as it was only two of us and the speaker will be concentrating on her attention.
We were always in agreement. Even when we argue, our argument was just for kidding.
She became busy fighting for elderly patient who mistreated by her trustee, she spent time after work calling and searching. She reached the Ombudsman to get that patient what right for her. In the end she did get that patient to were she supposed to be.
She was devoted to her work, to her family, caring person and pleasant.
It is very sad to hear that you left that early but your memory will stay forever
My deep condolences to Sean who I took the family board exam with him and the children.
I hope that Carol in better place now

Someone once said "Carol is not an ordinary woman." I have known that since I met her August 1987. She looked beyond the possible, and her three boys along with many others have been blessed by her foresight. She remained approachable and attentive to all who needed advice, encouragement or a listening ear.
I have lost the physical presence of my soulmate, but I am joined by the community of touched lives with whom I share her, and as we journey, we are buoyed up by her silent strength, her memory, and the principles by which she lived.
"For not with swords loud clashing,
Nor roll of stirring drums,
With deeds of love and mercy,
The heavenly kingdom comes." Ernest W. Shurtleff.

My deepest condolences to Sean, the children, and all the family. Dr. Smith was a beautiful person inside and out. I worked with her at Brian Center Yanveyville. She was a caring and thoughtful person. I remember a nurse could not start an IV after several attempts. She said I will try and she did. I will miss her dearly. She was my friend and mentor. I will always remember our last conversation together. May all your beautiful memories and family photos throughout the years bring comfort and a peace that surpasseses all understanding.

There is not a time in my adult life that I don’t recall Carol not being a part of. I cannot remember any memory without her being present in some way, shape or form. From moving from one state to another, to my wedding, birth of Malia to moving into our new home in Ohio. She is my sister through and through. We talked almost daily, and when we were not talking we were texting. My sister became my mom’s second daughter. Initially my mom would ask? Do you have to talk to her everyday and I would respond vehemently, yes! This quickly evolved to our conversation always ending with” How is my daughter Carol?”.
My sister and I met for the first time more than 20 years ago and it seems that we have known each other for even longer. We have laughed together, we celebrated together, and we have cried together.I now call her Auntie Marie because that is how she will always be remembered by my daughter Malia .
She has touched everyone in her life in a positive and unforgettable way.She loved fiercely and unconditionally.
My sister /Auntie Marie, we love you and we miss you. You are at peace.
Our sincere condolences to Sean,Amery and Brendon.

Carol's passing is a devastating loss to her loving husband and sons, and the rest of her family. Annmarie is the name that I know. I did not know the name Carol until I met Sean, that awesome man that she married.
She became a part of my life when we shared an apartment in East Hartford, CT in the early 1990's. We helped each other through some very tough times. She became my sister and was informally adopted by my brothers Rollion, Willpert and their families. Her first marriage proposal came from my 6-year old son, Marcel. He loved her. Such was the person called Carol Annmarie.
She was focused and had a plan for her life. She always wanted to be a doctor and so did Sean. Due to cost, Sean was willing to shelve his dream to allow her to continue to medical school. She was having none of that. They were both going to medical school. Such was the love she had for her wonderful Sean. Such is the love that I continued to see for years.
I was living down the hall from them when I had surgery. She properly instructed Sean to make soup for me, take it to me and make sure that I ate. He was obedient to her command. It was a pleasure to watch her blossom over the years and become a mother to two very special sons. She was proud of them.
Annmarie was a gem. She was tired, so she went to sleep.
On behalf of Marcel and myself, I send sincere condolences to Sean, Amery, Brendan and the rest of the family who will most certainly miss her, as will I.

This was quite a shock. Dr. Carol Henry-Smith, you will be missed by me and many others. We talked and laughed. You showed me the holistic approach to medicine. You would tell me all the time, stop taking all the medication. Dr Smith, I can say I don’t take all that medicine now. You listened to me and gave me great advice which will hold dear to me forever. You were a great inspiration to me and everyone whom you knew. Your light will still shine through all your hard work and dedication. You can take your rest. Job well done. Love you forever.
