Obituary of Eugene Domnick DiSabatino

Eugene D. DiSabatino, 90, born in Wilmington, Delaware on May 10, 1922, died peacefully on July 4th in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He also spent the past 40 years as a resident of the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, Florida. Gene graduated from Wilmington High School and the University of Delaware. In 1943 he enlisted in the army. At the end of basic training Gene was sent to MIT to complete a Civil Engineering course and then studied at NYU in preparation for joining the infantry in Europe. Rather than joining the infantry Gene was sent to Los Alamos to work on the Manhattan Project. It was in Los Alamos that he met and married Mary Clare Gannon. Gene returned to Wilmington to work at the family owned business, Ernest DiSabatino & Sons (EDIS), where he eventually served as president & CEO. During this time and into retirement he served on many boards including the National Joint Board for the Settlement of Jurisdictional Disputes, as president of The Wilmington Country Club and ORCA at Ocean Reef in Florida; received numerous awards including the Josiah Marvel Cup, and served on many committees including the United Way and the University of Delaware. Gene was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Mary Clare Gannon DiSabatino, his parents Domnick and Pauline DiSabatino, brother Dick, sisters Sylvia and Angela. He is survived by a sister Joanne Pollari, 3 daughters, Gena DiSabatino, Niki Hawkins (John), Neesy Decherney (Stephen) and 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to St. Justin Martyr Catholic Church, 105500 Overseas Highway, Key Largo, FL 33037
