Katherine Diane “Kathy” Duncan

May 19, 1959- June 18, 2023

Katherine Diane Duncan May 19, 1959 – June 18, 2023, Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Katherine, age 64, passed away on Sunday, June 18, 2023, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Born in Jackson, MS to the late Dorothy Parnell Martin. At a young age she was nicknamed Kathy and grew up with her younger brother Steve Van Egmond, Kathy talked of their many adventures together. From a young age Kathy enjoyed seeing the world and that continued throughout her life.

Because of her love of travel and her giving nature, Kathy volunteered for the Peace Corps, during her time as a student at UNC Chapel Hill. For three years Kathy gave her heart and creativity to the people of Grenada West Indies. She fell in love and started a blended family. Upon returning home she completed her Bachelor’s degree at UNC and continued to devote her life to service. Kathy Loved helping others and giving back, she became a Registered Nurse and gained a fulfilling career for over twenty years. She finished her career at Carol Woods, where she touched the hearts of all her coworkers and residents.  

Loved by a large community of family and friends, Kathy is survived by her sons, Alex, and Neal Duncan; her stepdaughter Connie Duncan; as well as her son-in-law Babacar Diouf and grandkids Aaron and Sina Diouf. While raising her children in Chapel Hill, she loved to volunteer in any way she could. She is well known as the Team Mom to the Chapel Hill High School (CHHS) football team, a role she held for 7 years. Known largely to her community as Ms. Kathy or Ms. Duncan, she took pride in her service and leadership for her community, in her career, and as a mother. In her spare time she spent hours writing and crafting, a joy she shared with many. Kathy will forever be remembered and loved by all of those who knew her.

A Celebration of Kathy’s life will be held on Friday, June 23, 2023, at 2:00 PM at Mt. Carmel Church, 2016 Mt. Carmel Church Rd., Chapel Hill, NC 27516.
