Obituary of Timothy Desmond McGerty

Please share a memory of Timothy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Timothy Desmond McGerty was born on December 18, 1936 to Albert Chester McGerty and Catherine Connole McGerty in Minneapolis Minnesota. He was reared in Los Angeles, California, graduating from John Marshall High School. Tim received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business from the University of Minnesota and a Master of Business Administration from Loyola University in Chicago. Keen analytic skills, respect for the value and dignity of work, and understanding of human nature characterized his career as a human resources manager in technical and manufacturing companies in Wisconsin and Illinois.

Tim passed away at home on Wednesday, May 31, 2023 under the care of UNC Hospice.

Tim is survived by his wife, Ellen Shanahan; two children, son, Patrick McGerty (and fiancée Kay Talesnick) of LaGrange, Illinois; daughter Kathleen Lowey (and husband Christopher Lowey) of Foxborough, Massachusetts; and three grandsons, Robert Lowey, Michael McGerty, and Daniel Lowey. He is remembered fondly by the mother of his children, Marcia McGerty of Palos Hills, Illinois.

Funeral services will be held at the Newman Catholic Parish, 218 Pittsboro Street, Chapel Hill, North Carolina on Monday, June 5, 2023. Visitation at the church will be held at 9.30 am, followed by the Funeral Mass at 10.30 am and burial at Saint Matthew Catholic Cemetery, 1001 Mason Road, Durham, North Carolina.

Tim and Ellen were happy to make their lifetime home together in Fearrington Village. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the United Way of Chatham County, PO Box 1066, Pittsboro NC 27312, for the Chatham Housing Collective program to end homelessness and alleviate housing insecurity in their chosen home county would be gratefully appreciated.

Walker's Funeral Home of Chapel Hill is assisting the McGerty family.
