I just learned for Professor McCoy's passing. He taught two of my classes, when I was an undergraduate at UNC. I loved his classes and his passion for all things related to Greek antiquity. The fact that I was searching his name to see what he was up to over twenty years after his classes reflects how much of an impact he had on me. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, and I hope they know how much he meant to his students.
I had the pleasure of playing tennis with Jim for many years. He added a light side to our matches ever week. Jim was kind enough to set up our private tour of Crete many years ago and it became a trip we will never forget.
Thanks Jim for the many laughs, smiles, and tennis matches.

I just learned of the passing of Dr. McCoy. I worked with him so many, many years in Summer School at UNC. He and I spent hours coordinating his summer trips to Greece. That was a true passion of his. Since my retirement in 2013, I have thought of him often. He made my list of favorite people at UNC. Prayers to his family.
Dr. McCoy was one of my advisors in Grad School for Ancient History, and I was one of his T.A.'s for several years. I remember his mentoring in grading and teaching fondly. He loved Greek military history especially, and I enjoyed learned a great deal in that class especially. My condolences to his family
