Betsy Fowler West McMillan
Betsy Fowler West McMillan, age 78, died on Saturday, July 14th peacefully and with close family by her side in Burlington, NC. She was a public school teacher for over 30 years. She won a national Freedom's Foundation Award, Valley Forge, PA when she was a teacher at Altamahaw-Ossipee school in Burlington. She was an alumna of Chapel Hill High School, University of North Carolina (Phi Beta Kappa), and the University of Maryland. She is survived by daughter Wendy West of Decatur, Georgia; son James West of Graham, NC and his wife Michelle; two grandchildren Alayna Lee West and Emory James West of Graham, NC; sister, Kay Fowler Nielsen of Marietta, Georgia and Fred Nielsen; sister-in-law Margaret West Smith of Chapel Hill and Gene Smith; brother-in-law Boyd Ellington of Carrboro; step-daughter Shirley Moore of Knoxville, TN; and lots of nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Ms. McMillan was pre-deceased by husband James Howard McMillan and husband Jesse Lee West, Jr. and sister Sue Fowler Ellington. Mrs. McMillan was a resident of Twin Lakes Community in Burlington since 2005. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and teacher. A private graveside service will be held in Carrboro, NC at Westwood cemetery for family and close friends. Call Walkers in Chapel Hill 919-942-3861 for arrangements.
