Obituary of Virginia Maynard

Virginia Maynard of Chapel Hill, North Carolina died on March 20, 2023 due to medical complications following a long term battle with dementia . She was 88. She was born in Marion, Indiana on April 14, 1934 to Ella Mae and Carl Kennedy. As a child, her family moved to the beautiful mountains of Asheville, which fostered Virginia's lifelong love of nature and the outdoors. She attended Women’s College (now UNCG) where she earned her BA in Botany. She settled in Chapel Hill in 1954, and there, she married James Maynard of Chapel Hill (deceased). They resided in a home built by James' father in 1937 on McCauley Street.  There she and James raised their 4 children- Katherine (deceased), Linda, Janet (deceased) and John Maynard. After moving out of the city limits, she began working at Wee Care and retired after 12 years. She loved being creative and offering care to the infants and toddlers. She was passionate about gardening, exploring the outdoors, and simply being in nature. Researching genealogy also brought her immense happiness. Her smile and the infectious joy she drew from nature will be deeply missed. A graveside service will be held at the Old Chapel Hill cemetery on March 30 at 2:00pm. Walker’s funeral home in Chapel Hill is assisting the family.
