Claire's son Dan and I were at Harvard together, and I will never forget the great warmth with which she and her husband welcomed me in their home for Thanksgiving 1978, my first ever visit to Washington DC. As I pursued my own rather non-linear career as an academic and medievalist, she remained a constant friend, supportive mentor, and delightful conversationalist whenever my husband (a foreign service officer) and I were in the DC area. I miss her, and I offer our deepest sympathies to Dan and Eduardo.

I first met Claire at CASVA. We were part of the second-year class. During that marvelous and eye-opening year, Claire was a force to be reckoned with at our shop-talks and fearsome colloquia. I remember her trenchant comments and her lovely capacity for friendship. When that memorable time was up, happily, we remained friends. I was commuting from Washington to the University of Delaware then, and we would get together on occasion with her beloved Stan [who created an imaginative leather binding for my Voyage into Substance book]. When I began teaching at the University of Chicago in 1981, those encounters , alas, became more fleeting. We simply seized them as we could.
I am so deeply sorry for your loss. And the photo is so true to form, so characteristic Claire: direct, skeptical, engaged and engaging. It went straight to my heart.
Warmest wishes and in sorrow,
Barbara Stafford

I don’t remember when I first met Claire—no doubt at some academic conference. She was an older, very well-known scholar of medieval art, and I was a somewhat younger scholar of medieval literature, who had begun to wander into the field of medieval art. Claire and I shared a Russian/Polish Jewish heritage, and we fell easily into friendship and mutual appreciation (though she was, and always will be, way ahead of me as an art historian). She was so kind, and humorous; she was always appreciative and encouraging. I was teaching in the Midwest, but I’d get to meet up with her in D.C. or New York, in the summers or at conferences. I even got to visit with her at her house, and to see and admire Stan’s beautiful bindings.
Over time, as she retired and as I got wound up in academic responsibilities, we fell out of contact—though I never stopped thinking of her—and her books are still on my shelves, within easy reach. I’m very sorry now I didn’t get to connect with her again. I will always remember her with love and gratitude.

My deepest condolences to Claire's family. When I was a pre-doc at CASVA in the early 1990s, Claire and Stan were very kind to me, and we became friends. We've gone to concerts together and Stan made a leather book binding of my first book. They also introduced me to many nice things in DC. I'll always have very fond memories of Claire and Stan. I am deeply saddened to learn of Claire's death. In a long and varied life enriched by friendships with so many splendid women, she remains one of the most remarkable whose company I was privileged to share. Unassuming in manner, she was a fierce intellect, but a gentle spirit. It was always a delight to converse with her about her widely ranging interests, and in a difficult period of my life she was an inspiring example and a great comfort to me. Owing to ageing and distance it is some years now since we have been able to meet, but the hours I spent with her and her beloved Stan in Que Lane will always be among my most treasured memories. I send my condolences to Daniel and Eduardo, and to all her other friends at this time. Dale Kent

I am so sorry to hear about Claire. She was a supportive, down to earth presence at CASVA when I was there long ago and she and Stan stayed in touch once I moved on to the Met and was working in the drawings and prints department. A lovely person, clearly dedicated to her scholarship and family.
