There are only a limited number of people one meets in their life who have a profound impact on them and at the end of the day, you can say you were truly blessed to have known them. Erik Welch was one such person.
When you are in the position to give a thumbs up or a thumbs down to hiring someone, there are so many things to consider as your decision is one you have to live with [good or bad]. Bringing Erik into the Starr family five years ago was absolutely, positively one such decision that I have never had to regret. To see Erik grow in his knowledge and the reputation he built that resulted in every foreman in our group out at Duke jockeying to get him on their crew was both awesome and amusing.
We have all heard the expression 'no grass grows under that guy's feet', well with Erik I'm not sure a blade of grass could have stuck to his feet. He was perpetual motion, maybe that's the reason for the 30" waist line.
To his family, thank you for allowing me to share him with you for these five years. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this time of grieving as it the natural thing to do, but dwell on the happier times as I will. I have the attached photo posted in my job trailer where it will remain as longs as I occupy my chair here. It is the same photo we handed out to our crew when we gathered on Tuesday morning.
