James “Jim” L. Carter died on February 7, 2023 at his home in Hillsborough, NC after a brief battle with cancer at the age of 83.  Jim was born September 25, 1939 in Durham NC, to the late Spurgeon and Vera Addison Carter. He was preceded in death following Larry and John Cox, his sons. Jim is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Mrs. Bertha Lovett Carter and their children David and wife Meagan Carter, Erin Carter, Deborah and husband Willie Fox, and Jim’s grandchildren Hunter, Charlie, and Jacob Carter, Amanda Fox, William Fox, and Scarlett Cox. Also, survives his two great grandchildren Austin Bryant and Liam Fox and brothers in laws  A.D. and wife Callie Stuart and J.T. and wife Dar Lovett and sister in law Janet Lovett.

Jim was a graduate of Durham High School in Durham County NC; class of 1957. Jim served in the Naval Air Force, where he served his country for 6 dedicated years before being honorably discharged. After his time in service, Jim went on to earn his Associate Degree in Accounting at Durham Technical Community College. After graduating, Jim joined the United States Postal Service where he spent over 34 years in multiple positions starting as a postal clerk in Durham NC, then climbing his way to the NC APWU President, proceeding on to become a labor relations representative in Raleigh NC, moving on to superintendent of postal operations in Chapel Hill NC, and then finally retiring as the Honorable Postmaster of Graham NC.

After Retirement Jim spent time side by side with his beloved wife taking care of their family business. Hobbies included mowing and little projects around their mini farm. He was a dedicated family man who always made sure to spend quality time with each of his grandchildren so they knew they were special and loved in their own ways. Not only did Jim and his beloved wife adore their small blended family, they opened their arms to anyone who touched their hearts and considered all of them to be an addition to their extended family. Jim and his wife loved to take their getaway trips to their little mountain home in East Tennessee, along with many trips with their daughter Erin, traveling with her swim teams. David was not only his son, but his personal handyman who was only a phone call away to help with the many chores to keep up their family business. His daughter-in-law Meagan became the property manager to help with the family business.

Family will be having visitation Saturday February 11th 2023, at his home church in Hillsborough NC at Mars Hill Baptist Church where Jim was a faithful member and Sunday School teacher starting at 11 am. Following the visitation there will be a graveside service beginning at 12:00 being officiated by their Pastor Daniel Gregory. Family will receive friends in the fellowship hall immediately after the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations made to Mars Hill Baptist Church cemetery fund or donations can be made to Liberty Hospice of Durham, NC. As always, donations can be made to any charity of your choice that brings joy to your heart.

A special thank you to my Sister in law Janet and my Mars Hill family for their love and support during our time of need. Also to Liberty Hospice of Durham, NC for going beyond the call of duty and the compassionate support and care they showed our family during our time of need.
