Obituary of John Thomas Gunter

Mr. John Thomas “Tommy” Gunter, 89, of Mebane, passed away on Monday, January 30, 2023 at Alamance Regional Medical Center. He was the loving husband of 67 years to Sylvia Melton Gunter, who survives. He was born in Durham County on August 15, 1933 to John Calvin Gunter and Vivian Bell Gunter, both deceased. He was proud veteran of the United States Air Force with the rank of Staff Sergeant E – 5 and he was heavily involved in the Strategic Air Command, serving during the Korean War between 1953 – 1957. Tommy was a member of The Lamb’s Chapel and also a proud member of The Road Ace’s and The Cardinal Airplane Club.eTomm

Other than his wife of the home, he is survived by two children; a son, David and his wife Toika, of Mebane; one daughter, Karen Harp and her husband Bruce of Florida. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Jason Paschal, Crystal Cothern and Tara Paschal, all of Florida. He also leaves behind seven great grandchildren.

The family will have visitation on Thursday, February 2, 2023 at Walker’s Funeral Home in Mebane from 6:00pm to 8:00pm and a Graveside Service with Military Rites will be held at Salisbury National Cemetery, 501 Statesville Boulevard, Salisbury, North Carolina on Friday, February 3, 2023 at 1:00pm with Mr. Ron Williams officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to St. Jude Childrens Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105 in loving memory of Tommy.
