Obituary of Mary Enfield Stark

Mary Enfield Stark passed from this life peacefully on Friday, January 13, 2023. Born in Maxwell, Iowa in 1927, Mary Jean Enfield married her high school sweetheart, Donald Gerald “Don” Stark, and they remained devoted to each other throughout their 77 year marriage.

 

Mary always had an interest in music and played the French horn in high school. She attended Marycrest College before graduating from Framingham State University in Massachusetts while simultaneously raising her two boys. After college she taught school in Iowa, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Tokyo. She was a long-time member of PEO (Philanthropic Educational Organization).

 

Mary was a Red Cross volunteer and worked with wounded US soldiers in a Tokyo hospital during the Vietnam War. She served on numerous boards including the Board of Trustees of Columbia College and the Savannah Historic Theater Restoration.

 

Living abroad instilled in Mary a life long passion for travel, and there was no destination too far! Though she always had many interests, Mary was bolstered by her love of God, country and family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Stark and her son, Donald Stark, Jr. She is survived by her son Stevan Stark (Ellen), grandchildren Laura Stark (Dave Ward), Tammy Bloomberg, Stevan Stark, Jr, Lindsey Phillips (Jamie), Caroline Hale (Ryan), great grandchildren Abby, Ella, and Chase Bloomberg, Stella and Rozalia Stark, Georgia and Charlotte Phillips and Briley and Sydney Hale.

 

Walker’s Funeral Home in Chapel Hill is assisting the family.
