Obituary of George Robert Hoag
Please share a memory of George to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
George Robert Hoag, husband of 65 years to Rosemary Shepard Hoag, and Papa to Brigid, Gretchen, and Lucy, died on January 11, 2023. He was 87. George was born in Dallas, Texas, but after attending Loyola University and Tulane University in New Orleans, he became a New Orleanian at heart. The family moved to Chapel Hill, NC in 1983.
George’s biggest passion was cooking, and his family and friends enjoyed his forays into a variety of cuisines. When not cooking, or searching for the best barbecue, he was traveling to school libraries to sell books for the Follett Library Book Company. Barnes and Noble was lucky to have him as a popular children’s story time reader, and he also entertained many New Orleans audiences as the Mouse King and Mother Ginger in the Nutcracker ballet.
George had a lot of diverse interests, including calligraphy, macrame, cycling, reading, music, and large paper models. He never knew a stranger!
George is survived by his wife and three daughters, as well as grandchildren Patrick, Rebecca and Sam, Madeline and Logan. A private memorial will be held at a later date.
Walkers Funeral Home of Chapel Hill is assisting the Hoag family.
