Obituary of Boyd McKinley Ellington

Boyd McKinley Ellington, 87, beloved father, husband, grandfather, great- grandfather, uncle, and brother passed away on January 1, 2023. Boyd was the son of Carl and Beulah Ellington.
Boyd was predeceased by his wife, Alice Sue Fowler Ellington. They became sweethearts while attending Chapel Hill High School. Boyd and Sue married in 1957.
He is survived by his son, Rory Boyd Ellington, Rory’s wife Gwyn Mansfield Ellington, their daughter Olivia Fowler Ellington, her husband Nick Hodges and their son Knox. He is also survived by daughter Susan Hope Ellington Bristol, Hope’s husband Rees Ferguson Bristol and their son McKinley Ferguson Bristol.
He is also survived by a sister, Priscilla Mae Ellington McFarland wife of deceased husband, Harold McFarland and a brother, Richard Keith Ellington, and his wife Alice Anne Patterson Ellington.
Boyd was a graduate of Campbell University. He was retired form UNC-Chapel Hill as a long-time manager of the textbook division in the UNC Student Stores. Prior to that he was the student store’s manager at Campbell University.
Boyd served his country in the US Army in Korea, as well as in the Army Reserves. For many years he was a volunteer fireman as well as an alderman for the town of Carrboro. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Boyd enjoyed gospel music, Carolina athletes, NASCAR racing, golf, baseball and wood working. Most of all he loved spending time with his friends and family.
There will be a graveside service at the Westwood Cemetery in Carrboro, N.C. on Saturday, January 7, 2023, at 11:00am.
Memorial gifts can be sent to Baptist Children's Homes in Thomasville, North Carolina. This organization is one Boyd supported for many years.
