Jean Stanford Mann passed away peacefully in her home in Chapel Hill, NC on Wednesday, November 2, 2022. She was 88 years old. 

She was born on May 10, 1934 to Mary McIver Stanford and Charles Whitson Stanford. She was raised on their family’s dairy farm in rural Orange County. Jean was a lifetime resident of Orange County. She attended Chapel Hill High School and met Eddie Mann during their school days. She attended Greensboro Women’s College and then UNC-Chapel Hill and was trained as a teacher. She then married her high school sweetheart, Edward (Eddie) Newton Mann, Jr. They raised three children and traveled all over the US and abroad. Eddie passed away on July 15, 2017 after they had been married for 61 years. 

Jean was a loving mother and grandmother and brought great care and joy to her family, friends, and church family. She was very creative and enjoyed crocheting and knitting, painting, and crafts. She even provided her home swimming pool for swimming lessons to allow many children in rural Orange County to learn to swim. 

She was a lifetime member of Bethlehem Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir for many years. Jean served as an elder and Clerk of Session. She was an active church member who was always willing to help as needed. 

She is survived by her three children, Jennifer (Jenny) Mann Hawley, Edward Newton Mann III, and Charles Stanford Mann and their spouses, Lonnie Hawley, Lindsay Woodruff Mann, and Lori Artim Mann. She had five beloved grandchildren, Rachel Hawley, Meredith Hawley Favre, McIver Mann, Ward Mann, and Charlotte Mann. 

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, 3624 Saxapahaw Bethlehem Church Road, Mebane NC, 27302.

A memorial for her family and church family was held to celebrate Jean’s life on Sunday, November 6th at Bethlehem Presbyterian Church in Mebane, NC.
