Derek was one of the toughest dudes I ever knew. Over a decade ago I went through BUD/S Hell Week with Derek. He was the oldest and shortest member of our class. Normally that is not a good recipe for that type of training. But Derek had a fire inside of him. You could literally see it in his eyes. That desire proved to be far more consequential than any perceived limitation.
